Within three months of taking up cycling, he had qualified to compete at the U15 Australian National Championships in Sydney, where he won two gold medals and broke two Australian records in the process. It was clear to all that Perko was a huge talent and was destined for greatness. Perko has continued to improve year after year taking out multiple Sprint & Keirin Australian Championship titles along with numerous UCI Track World Cup Sprint and Keirin victories. Following his Silver medal in the Sprint at the UCI Track World Championships in 2010 Perko went one better in 2011 when he took home gold in the Keirin at the World Championships.
The Australian team of Shane Perkins, Scott Sunderland and Matthew Glaetzer edged ahead of France to win the Team Sprint at the 2012 UCI Track World Championships in Melbourne, Australia. Perko also showed he is in impressive form by finishing fourth in the Men’s Sprint finals.
Perko overcame illness at the 2012 London Olympic Games to be the only male sprinter to make it to all Team Sprint, Sprint and Keirin finals. He won a Bronze medal in the Sprint in his very first appearance at an Olympic Games. He now has his eyes set on Gold in Rio!Following shoulder surgery in January to repair an injury he received after being hit by a car out training the week of the 2012 World Championships in Melbourne he returned to Japan to compete in the Japanese Keirin racing. After a quick trip to KL and Australia to win a few more international races he returned to Japan to win 15 races from 16 starts and 1 second!
In 2017 Shane announced that he would continue striving towards his goal of competing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and to enable him to do so, he switched countries of representation and now competes for Russia on the International circuit. In 2017 Shane won his first big International event under the Russian banner winning the Team Sprint at the European Championships.
Shane, a Nationalised Russian Citizen is preparing for the UCI World Championships season and is aiming for his penultimate goal of competing at the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020.
